December Reading

It's not too late to read the three articles (with targeted questions included) from the Journal of Urban Mathematics Education. Authors for the articles include the following: Danny B. Martin, Maisie L. Gholson, Jacqueline Leonard, Jere Confrey, and Michael T. Battista. The December reading is the first of three that will be discussed in the March webinar as a part of a Call for a Collective Action. Share your comments in the December Social Circle.

Did you participate in the Call for a Collective Action Webinar held December 5th? Over 250 people were on the call to engage in a discussion of the first set of readings. View the webinar! January Reading

The reading for January 2017, suggested by Benjamin Banneker Association, Inc. is Beyond Banneker: Black Mathematicians and the Paths to Excellence by Erica N. Walker. The targeted questions are: what is the nature of the path for developing mathematics education excellence and scholarship? What challenges do we face and what changes might mitigate them? The Social Circle for this reading will be added in January.

GSDMC Conference

The Greater San Diego Mathematics Council (GSDMC) Conference will be held Friday, January 20, 2017, at Marina Village.  TODOS Immediate Past President Susie Håkansson will be one of the featured speakers.  The conference theme, Student Thinking at the Helm of the Common Core Classroom, has three areas of emphasis: focus on student thinking, 21st century skills, and STEM and will also feature an innovative, interactive Learning Lounge.

Size of U.S. Immigration Workforce

The size of U.S. unauthorized immigrant workforce was stable after the great recession. There were 8 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. working or looking for work in 2014, making up 5% of the civilian labor force, according to new Pew Research Center estimates. The number was unchanged and the share was down slightly since 2009, the year the Great Recession officially ended.

End-of-Year TODOS Contributions

Although #GivingTuesday has passed, there is still time left to make an end-of-year TODOS contribution for tax year 2016. Contributions can be designated to support: advocacy, professional development for social justice, Cathy Kinzer Memorial PD Award, or Student Awards. You can also make a designation of your choice. Less Than a Month Left to Submit a Nomination!

Nominations deadline for the Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award is January 9, 2017. It's not too late to begin the process. In addition to the nomination narrative to be submitted by a TODOS member, letters of support need to be included in the nominations packet. Letters of support writers need not be TODOS members. Don't wait until it's too late!

Inside Mathematics Also for Coaches and Administrators

While Inside Mathematics is best known for hundreds of videos that enable virtual visits to thriving mathematics classrooms, it also offers print and video resources for coaches (including mentors), and administrators (including principals, department chairs, and district leaders). PME-NA 2017 Call for Proposals

Submit a proposal for the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME-NA) 2017 Conference that will be held October 5-8, 2017, in Indianapolis, IN. Continuing the efforts started in 2016, one goal for this conference is to broaden participation of colleagues from across North America. Thus, PME-NA will accept and review proposals written in English, Spanish, or French. Go to the submission page.

Globally Minded Educators

The NEA Foundation is accepting applications from all active NEA classroom teachers for its 2018 Global Learning Fellowship. Let the world be your classroom! The NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellowship offers educators 12 months of professional development to support them as they build global competence skills and create their own lesson plans to share with educators around the world. Fellows will also travel to another country in the summer for a nine-day international field study. The deadline to apply is February 28, 2017.

T2T International

Teachers2Teachers-International organizes groups of U.S. educators on trips to Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Ecuador to provide coaching in STEM subjects. T2T-I's model seeks to form bridges across cultures by creating relationships of trust where listening comes first. Each community's learning goals are discerned and respected.
