TODOS: Mathematics for ALL

June Reading

There is still time to complete the June Reading, suggested by Robert Berry III of the University of Virginia: For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood ... and the Rest of Y'all Too: Reality Pedagogy and Urban Education (2016) by Christopher Emdin. The targeted questions include the following: What are ways teachers can gain access to community resources (human and material)? How can we make sense of this for mathematics teaching and learning? Enter your comments and ideas in the Community Forum Network.

Community Forum Networks

Navigating the website to find the Social Circles was a challenge for some. Since the migration of the TODOS database, networking has become more user friendly through the Community Forum Networks. Unlike the Social Circles, you don’t have to join. The public has access, but only members can respond to posts. You can subscribe to be informed of comments. Most of the entries from the old Social Circles have been summarized in the Community Forum. There are two main topics: Call for a Collective Action and Teaching for Excellence and Equity in Mathematics (TEEM).

July Reading

The July Reading, suggested by the CMC-South, is Teaching Mathematics for Social Justice: Conversations with Educators, edited by Anita A. Wager and David W. Stinson. Targeted questions include the following: how might teachers begin to teach mathematics for social justice? How might teacher educators begin to teach teachers how to teach mathematics for social justice? How might teaching mathematics for social justice “look like?” How can mathematics be re-envisioned as a means to create a more socially just world?

Call for a Collective Action June 7th Webinar!

The third Call for a Collective Action Webinar was held June 7th focusing on the readings from March, April, and May. The link to the webinar will be included in the July 2017 Enews. The next webinar to discuss the June, July, and August readings will be on September 7th. More information will be included in the August 2017 Enews. The first year of readings will be complete by the end of August.

Volunteer at TODOS Booth during CAMT

Are you planning to attend the Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (CAMT) in Fort Worth, TX, July 10-12, 2017? If so, consider volunteering to staff the TODOS Booth for two hours or more. Go to the schedule and sign up. You can communicate the benefits of being a member of TODOS to your friends and colleagues and encourage them to join TODOS. See you there!

TEEM 8 Is Available!

TODOS Members have access to TEEM 8. You can also access TEEM 8 (and other current issues of Noticias and Enews) once you log in on the TODOS website. Go to Publications, and the last link in the list directs you to the current issues of the three ongoing publications. In addition, a Community Forum Network topic has been established for TEEM, and TEEM 8 is one of the Forums in TEEM. Read the articles and engage in conversation with other TODOS members about the content and issues raised.

NCSM Summer Academy

The 2017 NCSM Summer Academy is coming to Bangor, Maine, July 24-26! Bring the family for an amazing vacation.  Keynote speaker, NCSM President Connie Schrock, NCSM board members, and participants will be learning together during this three-day conference for mathematics teachers, teacher leaders, coaches, consultants, professional developers, department chairs, and district leaders of mathematics programs. Registration is now open and hotel information is available.

TODOS Board Member Improving

Carol A. Edwards, TODOS Conferences Committee Chair, was in intensive care for over a month and moved out of intensive care two weeks ago. She is steadily improving at a post-acute care and rehabilitation center. Take time to send a card or note to Carol’s daughter-in-law, Jody Edwards. Carol can use all of the positive thoughts, love, support, and comfort you can give her. Send to: Carol Edwards, c/o Jody Mahaffey-Edwards, 1293 N. Bedford Dr., Chandler, AZ 85225.

EQUALS Founder

Nancy Kreinberg, founder of EQUALS, died peacefully in her sleep on May 27th. Her sons, Luke and Jeb, asked that her community of friends be informed of this sad news.  EQUALS was a precursor to TODOS in many ways. Some of the TODOS founders learned from people in the EQUALS network in conceptualizing what to do to have TODOS grow strong.
