TODOS-MET Professional Development Grant

Consider applying for the 5th annual professional development grant co-sponsored by TODOS and NCTM! Fostering Support for Multilingual Classrooms provides financial assistance to PreK-12 schools for in-service to increase understanding and expertise in fostering support of multi-language development when teaching mathematics. Maximum: $4,000. Applicants must have a TODOS member and NCTM member by the deadline of November 1, 2021.

TODOS Live! October 21, 4:00 PM Pacific

Sign up now for the TODOS Live! session that will be held tomorrow titled Student and Family Centered Assessment in Practice. Drawing on the Student and Family-Centered Mathematics Assessment Commentary Paper, this webinar will consider ways that teachers are redefining what it means to assess with a focus on concepts and mathematical practices. TODOS Live! October 27, 4:00 PM Pacific

The second upcoming TODOS Live! session is Seven Practices to Make Your Math Class More Equitable. For too many underserved students, mathematics means confusion, failure, heartache, and feeling inadequate. Rather than risk failure, they simply choose not to "play" the game of school. In this presentation, participants will learn to use strategies of an equity pedagogy framework for engaging all students. Register now for the session facilitated by Pam Seda and Kyndall Brown.

TODOS Live! November 3, 4:00 PM Pacific

The third upcoming TODOS Live! is titled Awakening to My Call: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Mathematics Education. The speaker, Florence Glanfield, will share her journey as a human being that identifies as Métis (one of the recognized Indigenous nations in Canada) and as a woman in the fields of mathematics and mathematics education. She will share the ways in which her early experiences informed her work as a secondary mathematics teacher, and continue to inform her work and passion now. Register today! 

TODOS Live! November 11, 4:00 PM Pacific

The fourth TODOS Live! is titled Shades of Blackness: Rehumanizing Mathematics Education Through an Understanding of Sub-Saharan African Immigrants. Molade Osibodu and Missy Cosby will discuss their examination of the experiences of Sub-Saharan African immigrants as a way to highlight the complexities of attending to multiple versions of Blackness so that classroom teachers see their Black students as more than just a monolithic Black group. Register now! 

Are You Attending the AMATYC Conference?

The 2021 AMATYC Conference will be held in person October 28-31 in Phoenix and will also include some virtual days (November 5-6). It’s not too late to register. In addition, TODOS will have an Exhibit Booth at the conference. If you are attending AMATYC, consider volunteering to staff the booth for two hours or more. Stop by the TODOS Booth to visit with the TODOS President, Linda Fulmore, who will be heading the booth.

2021 CMC-S and CMC-N Conferences Are in Person

The CMC South Conference in Palm Springs (November 5-6) and CMC North Conference at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove (December 3-5) will be held in person this year. CMC-N also has virtual sessions on Saturdays. Go to their websites to view the sessions available during the conference. The Palm Springs Conference will include the TODOS Student Recognition ceremony. Register for one or both conferences!

NCTM Virtual Conference

The NCTM 2021 Fall Virtual Conference will be held November 17-20. Register today! In addition, TODOS will have a virtual Booth, with Exhibit Hall hours from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM Eastern Time when a TODOS member will be at the virtual booth. The TODOS room will be open during those hours for anyone to come in and have a conversation. Volunteers are solicited to be at the virtual booth. Volunteer at CMC-S in Palm Springs

Are you attending CMC-S in Palm Springs? TODOS will have an exhibit booth, so come by and visit with TODOS members. Better yet, volunteer to staff the booth! All sessions at CMC-N will be held on the Asilomar Conference grounds. The TODOS Booth will be in the Exhibit Hall located in Merrill Hall. Volunteer for two hours or more and share your passion for TODOS’ mission and goals with attendees! Submit a Proposal to Speak at NCSM

NCSM is now accepting speaker proposals for the NCSM 2022 Conference (Imagine! Inspire! Influence! Impact!) in Anaheim, September 26-28, 2022. They invite speakers with diverse views and varied experiences, including BIPOC as well as speakers from LGBTQ+ communities. Deadline is November 15, 2021.

Call for Proposals: 18th Annual MEAD Conference

The University of Arizona Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) has begun preparations for the 18th Annual Mathematics Educator Appreciation Day (MEAD) Conference, to be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022. The call for proposals is now available. All classroom teachers are encouraged to submit proposals. See attachment for additional information. Deadline to submit is November 5.

Developing an Access- and Equity-Oriented Mindset

Participate in this year’s CSU Math and Math Education Colloquium Series: Developing an Access- and Equity-Oriented Mindset in Mathematics Teaching and Learning, held November 5, 12, and 19 from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM Pacific Time. Explore what an access- and equity-oriented mindset might mean for those who teach K-12 math methods and math courses. California Mathematics Framework Conversation 

EdTrust West is convening a coalition to discuss the issue of tracking (or acceleration) that emerged as a controversial issue during the first public comment period. Speakers include those from San Francisco USD on their district’s implementation of de-tracking and tracking-lite math policies and Just Equations on math pathways grounded in equity principles. Join in the conversation on October 27 at 4:00 pm Pacific Time. Register today.

New Parent Resources 

The Parent Organization Network announces a new report, Teacher-Family Partnerships Empower Math Students. The report reflects the work of national organizations, leaders, researchers, and practitioners with expertise in family engagement and/or mathematics. Research show when parents are engaged in their children's education, student outcomes and schools improve. Reports are in both English and Spanish.

Student Contributor for a Book on Students of Color 

Do you have students who could contribute to Read and Reflect: Advocacy Stories from Students of Color in Mathematics, the third in a series by Drs. Pamela E. Harris and Aris Winger? The book will center the voices of graduate and undergraduate students of color who write around specific discussion questions. Encourage your students to share their stories and have them complete the preliminary interest form.

Is Statistics a Recipe for STEM Success? 

Why does traditional algebra play a dominant role in school mathematics, especially when there is more relevant and compelling content? Historically courses such as Algebra 2 and Precalculus have been considered essential to pursuing STEM fields. In this month’s blog, Pamela Burdman looks at a recent analysis that highlights new thinking about a prerequisites even when it comes to STEM success.

PAEMST Applicant Webinar in Spanish

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) will host an applicant webinar entirely in Spanish, on October 27th at 8:00 PM ET. Many applicants and nominees aren’t aware that they are able to submit their entire application, including the videotaped lesson, in Spanish. Register to attend the webinar. Questions?
