2020 TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity in Teaching and TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Awards

The TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity in Teaching and the TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Awards recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the quality of mathematics education provided for all students, in particular to Latina/o and/or Indigenous students. The honorees are mathematics educators who exhibit commitment to improving the mathematics education for all students and has made, or is making unique contributions that have impacted equity and access for underserved students. The individuals’ work in improving mathematics has influenced the school, community, leaders and practitioners, and its impact has been sustained.

2020 Recipient of the Iris M. Carl Teaching Award

Olga Torres from Tucson, AZ, is the 2020 winner of the Iris M. Carl Equity in Teaching Award. Olga taught for 35 years advocating for the “Rights of the Learner.” As a teacher, she created safe and nurturing classrooms that encouraged acts of trustworthiness from her students. Beyond the classroom, Olga changed the way teachers and researchers engaged in their profession and helped frame mathematics education as a humanizing and empowering practice. 2020 Recipient of the Iris M. Carl Leadership Award

Emma Treviño, a Collaborative Researcher for UC Riverside from San Leandro, CA, is the 2020 winner of the Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award. During her career, Emma took on numerous leadership roles at the local, state, and national level, working tirelessly to impact students’ lives and inspire other educators to do likewise. Emma designs PD in innovative ways to make it a “Thinking Curriculum” and has helped support the Herculean task of de-tracking large school systems. Join us in celebrating Emma’s selection.
