Candidate Statement for the office of Vice President

from Kay Gilliland:

Kay Gilliland

Title: Student Teacher Supervisor
Position:
Mills College

Questions: What experiences with students and colleagues have influenced your commitment to equity and access for the mathematics education of all learners, in particular Hispanic/Latino students? How will this impact your leadership of TODOS if elected?

Kay's Response: I taught mathematics students from many cultures, races and ethnic groups for twenty years. As a founding member of EQUALS at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley, I developed curriculum materials and teacher education institutes enabling teachers to encourage girls and students of color, in fact all students, to study mathematics and consider math-based fields of work. I emphasize equity as I meet with pre-service teachers and edit the NCSM Newsletter. I believe TODOS has already made a difference in educators’ perceptions of students’ potential and will exert an increasingly powerful influence on the opportunities afforded all students.

I would work to make sure the leaders of TODOS projects have the materials and resources needed, including the ongoing projects such as Teaching for Excellence and Equity in Mathematics  (TEEM), the Hispanic STEM initiative, the paper on Best Practices for EL Math, the Practitioners Research Conference and the T3 Regionals.  I encourage continued participation of TODOS in the Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Mathematics Education (CEEME). I feel strong support for the work of TODOS with teachers of Native American students. I would consult with the Resources Committee to secure funding for projects the members initiate to accomplish all the goals, especially increasing educators’ ability to foster the proficiency of all students—in particular Hispanic/Latino students—in rigorous and coherent mathematics.
