TODOS Member Wins Song Contest

Congratulations to longtime TODOS member and a founding editor of Teaching for Excellence and Equity in Mathematics (TEEM) Larry Lesser who won a National Museum of Mathematics "Pi Day of the Century" song contest on 3/14/15 for his song "American Pi." Also, in the April 2015 Math Horizons, Lesser has a lyric "Findin' Extrema Local" that may be sung to the tune of "Livin' La Vida Loca", a #1 hit for Ricky Martin, an artist very popular among students TODOS members teach.

What Drives People from High Poverty Schools?

In NCSM’s Marshall Memo, an article of interest to TODOS members focuses on teacher turnover in high poverty schools. Nicole Simon and Susan Moore Johnson say that teacher turnover in U.S. public schools has increased over the past three decades, especially in schools serving low-income neighborhoods. This constant teacher churn means the children of poverty are frequently taught by the least experienced and often the least effective teachers and attend schools without stable, trusting, productive adult-adult and adult-child relationships.
