TODOS 2021 Virtual Conference

Activating Agency, Access, and Advancement in Mathematics, the TODOS 2021 Virtual Conference that will be held June 21-23, 2021 is only four months away. Registration is now open and cost for the conference is $75 (includes a complimentary one-year new/renewal membership) and $125 (includes a complimentary three-year new/renewal membership). There will be  opportunities to network with conference attendees. Inspire your friends and colleagues to register!

TODOS 2021 Leadership Institute - Virtual

Do you understand how power and oppression are embedded in mathematics education? Do you want to increase your awareness of resources related to equity in mathematics education? Do you want to develop actionable steps to enact antiracist mathematics education? Participate in the TODOS 2021 Leadership InstituteChange-Agents Taking Action for Equity in Mathematics Education on June 24-25, 2021, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm Pacific Time. Registration ($75) is limited.

TEEM Vol. 12, No. 1 Is Posted

The newest issue of Teaching for Excellence and Equity in Mathematics (TEEM) Vol. 12, No. 1 is now available to TODOS members. The editorial opens with some powerful verses from Amanda Gorman as a call for reflection and a sign of hope for the year(s) ahead. This issue of TEEM has three externally-reviewed articles on different topics, all in the context of mathematics and bilingual learners. Consider submitting an article to future TEEM issues.

CASIO-TODOS Distance Learning & Access Webinars

There are three more webinars as part of the CASIO-TODOS partnership in the Distance Learning and Access Webinars. Dates, speakers, and titles are the following: February 24th, Zandra de Araujo will present Choice as a Foundation for Engagement and Empowerment, March 10th, Iram Khan will present Distance Learning for English Learners - Successes and Challenges, and March 24th, Maya Gueron will present Can You Her Me? 2021 National TODOS Student Awards

Nominate your student for the National TODOS Student Awards. TODOS will recognize 10 students in Grades 5-12 at a ceremony during the TODOS 2021 Virtual Conference in June. Students will receive a TI calculator and a certificate. Nominating teachers of award winners will receive a one-year membership/extension in TODOS and a certificate. The deadline to submit applications is Thursday, April 1, 2021. Students, their families, and teachers will be honored at a virtual ceremony on Monday, June 21st at 3:45 PM Pacific Time.

TODOS Board Elections: Deadline Is February 28th

Have you submitted your ballot for the TODOS Board elections? It’s not too late to vote! The following slate of candidates are on the ballot: President-Elect, Florence Glanfield and Erin Sylves; Vice President, Sylvia Celedón-Pattichis and Jon Oaks; and Director, Theodore Chao and Marian Dingle. Additional information is posted on the Board Election website. Deadline for voting is February 28th. Your vote counts!

NCTM Elections: Deadline Is April 1st

NCTM's 2021 Board of Directors election is now underway. You will be selecting one candidate for President-Elect, one candidate at the High School or Middle School level and three candidates At-Large. TODOS Members on the ballot include: Frederick L. Dillon and Kevin Dykema for President-Elect and Kyndall Brown, Zandra de Araujo, Michael D. Steele, and Cathery Yeh for Director At-Large. Vote now!

NCSM Elections Deadline Is March 15th

All current NCSM members are eligible to vote in the 2021 NCSM Board Elections. The open positions for the 2021 NCSM Election are Second Vice President and Regional Directors for Canada Region, Southern Region 1, and Western Region 1. The TODOS member on the ballot is Kristine Cunningham, a candidate for Regional Director Western 1. Go to the website for details. Take time to vote!

Re-release Edition of The Mo(ve)ment To Prioritize Antiracist Mathematics: Planning for This and Every School Year and the four supporting commentaries are available to you as one document. The Parents as Partners commentary is now in both English and Spanish. Download the document and share with friends and colleagues.

Listen to TODOS’s Podcasts

Have you listened to any TODOS Podcasts? In the last two years, TODOS has produced over 20 podcasts on a variety of topics. The recent Podcasts include the following: TODOS Origin Stories with Nora Ramirez, Bob McDonald, and Susie Håkansson; Advocate for Black Women in STEM with Nicole Joseph; and Dismantling Mathematics Microaggressions with Robert Q. It includes information for TODOS Live! webinars and other TODOS sponsored webinars in addition to mathematics education conferences and events. Submit Speaker Proposals to NCTM Regionals

NCTM is committed to safely bringing the mathematics community back together and resuming in-person conferences. They are accepting speaking proposal submissions for the NCTM Regional Conferences & Expositions through March 1, 2021: Phoenix, AZ in October 27-29, 2021; New Orleans, LA in February 2-4, 2022; and Indianapolis, IN in March 16-18, 2022. Submit your proposal soon.

Positioning Multilingual Learners for Success

Dr. Kathryn Chval will share what she has learned from exceptional teachers who establish conditions for student success in elementary school mathematics classrooms. She will discuss specific strategies and images of practice that facilitate access, engagement, and inclusion of children learning mathematics in languages that differ from their first languages. This webinar will be held on March 9th at 7:00 PM Eastern Time and is open to all.

News From the National Math Festival

The February issue of the National Math Festival News includes the announcement of the Mathical Book Prize Winners and Mathical Honor Books. The awards are in five grade spans: PreK, K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. This year’s Mathical Book Prize winners encourage youth to recognize and explore mathematical ideas in the world around them. Equity and Social Justice Committee at ICTM

Following the lead of the Greater San Diego Math Council, the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics has established a new Equity and Social Justice Committee that will provide training at Board meetings and will be responsible for a new department entitled Courageous Conversations in the ICTM journal, Indiana Mathematics Teacher.

Carole’s Corner: Puzzles, Projects, and Wisdom

The Center for Mathematics and Teaching (CMAT) established Carole’s Corner, a space on the CMAT website where Carole Greenes shares some of her engaging puzzles, projects, tasks, and wisdom. Carole would like these selected materials (and solutions) to be free to you, so download, enjoy yourself, and use with your students.

CANMEE Lesson Study Equity Commentator Course

The California Action Network for Mathematics Excellence and Equity (CANMEE) is offering its second CANMEE Equity Commentator Course from March to May 2021. See the flyer for additional information. CANMEE operationalizes equity in the classroom. Cost: Complimentary for California Educators and $25 for out-of-California Educators.
