From the TODOS President

One month has passed since the TODOS: Mathematics for ALL conference occurred in the place now known as Albuquerque NM, the traditional territory of the Pueblo of Sandia. It was an amazing space to gather as a community. It was the first time in 5 years that TODOS: Mathematics for ALL had held an in person conference. We all learned together during the conference and I want to acknowledge the contributions of each of the conference attendees, speakers, and organizers so that the community could learn about, talk about, and call ourselves to take actions that catalyze, cultivate, and …. Upcoming Book on Antiracist Mathematics Education

Coming soon! An amazing book of stories written for and by people who care, is expected Fall 2023. Titled Antiracist Mathematics Education: Stories of Acknowledgment, Action, and Accountability, each story is a chapter of ideas grounded in the recent position statement, The Mo(ve)ment to Prioritize Antiracist Mathematics and its four supporting commentaries. This book is important because racism continues to rear its ugly head in new and disturbing ways. This book is for students, teachers, parents & caregivers, administrators, and community members. TODOS Student Awards at the TODOS 2023 Conference

The following Albuquerque students were honored at the TODOS 2023 Conference. Congratulations and thank you to their teachers for their nominations! Student awardees and their teacher from La Mesa Elementary School are fifth-graders Amy P. C. and Alexander A. H. and teacher Ms. Sheccid Portillo-Lopez. Student awardees and their teacher from Cien Aguas International School are fifth graders Jesus E. M. C., Christofer C., and Kevin R., sixth grader Magdalena G., and teacher Ms. Fátima Grajeda. Thanks to the Society of Actuaries for sponsoring the Student Awards Reception.

2023 Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Awardee

Harold Asturias received the TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award. “Harold is also one of the leading experts in the [SF] Bay Area and nationally on teaching mathematics to English learners” cited one nominee. Another nominee indicated that “he is a connector who recognizes the needs of a program and the strengths of his ever-expanding group of colleagues and then matches them together to expand on and improve their collective work.” Congratulations, Harold!

2023 Iris M. Carl Equity in Teaching Awardee

Erin Sylves received the TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity in Teaching Award. One nominator said “She uses her role to build the capacity of school leaders and teachers to create the best learning environment possible for all students; breaking down silos and helping schools redesign systems to create equitable learning outcomes.” Another said “She did and continues to do what many find uncomfortable: confront deficit thinking in many contexts and with many educators ….” Congratulations, Erin!

Cathy Kinzer Memorial PD Awardee

Congratulations to Larissa Peru from Tucson, AZ, who was honored with the Cathy Kinzer Memorial Professional Development Award at the TODOS 2023 Conference in Albuquerque on Thursday, June 22! This award was established to honor Dr. Kinzer for her life-long commitment to equity in mathematics professional development. To continue her work, this award is given to a classroom teacher or mathematics coach to attend the TODOS 2023 conference.

Susie W. Håkansson Teacher Awardees

Congratulations to the following classroom teachers who received the Susie W. Håkansson Teacher Award to attend the TODOS Conference: Emily Burrell (VA), Nolan Fossum (CA), Lisett Sierra Garcia (UT), Michelle Lo (CA), Julitha Rials (KS), and Tameka Stephens (AL). This award was established to honor Dr. Håkansson’s commitment to full-time classroom teachers of mathematics in PK-12 school. 

T-shirt Campaign Raised $417!

Thanks to those of you who participated in the TODOS T-shirt campaign that raised $417 for TODOS. Many of you who attended the TODOS 2023 Conference saw members wearing them. The current campaign is over. Stay tuned for the next t-shirt campaign, possibly in the fall in anticipation of the 2023 NCTM Annual Meeting & Exposition and 55th NCSM Annual Conference, both in Washington, DC.

More Student Engagement

Do you know how often students engage with their classmates about math? Wisconsin middle school teacher Sara McKittrick observes more math discussions happening in her Inspiring Connections course from CPM Educational Program. "... students … working collaborative on percent error tasks, exhibiting puzzlement yet persevering … Thanks to CPM for their support of the TODOS Conference Welcome Keynote and Solstice Celebration.

CMC^3 Conference

The California Mathematics Council Community Colleges (CMC^3) is holding their conference December 8-9, in Monterey, CA. Keynote speakers are the TIPS Team from Sonoma State University and Dr. Pamela Harris. Speaker proposals are due September 1. All community college faculty members are asked to encourage their students to participate in their poster contest (in-person or virtual).

ICME 15 in Sydney, Australia

In just one year the ICME-15 will be held in Sydney, Australia, July 7-14, 2024. Some important news has been released, including the following: Registrations are now open, the deadline for submissions to Topic Study Groups has been extended, and the call for proposals of Discussion Groups and Workshops are now open. Go to the websites for details. Hope to see many TODOS members actively participating!
