Last month I wrote about preparing to attend the NCTM Annual Meeting & Exposition and the role of mentors in my professional life. I had an opportunity to attend sessions, both as part of the Annual meeting and activities in DC outside of the Annual meeting that once again reminded me of the importance of ongoing learning; and not only about mathematics education. Staff the TODOS Booth: CMC-N Conference in Asilomar

Are you attending the CMC-North Conference in Asilomar? If so, volunteer to staff the TODOS Booth anytime on December 1-2. You have the opportunity to engage in conversation with your friends and colleagues about TODOS and to encourage them to join this active and passionate organization. Registration for the conference is now closed as they have reached attendee capacity. The Exhibits are housed in Merrill Hall on the Asilomar Conference Grounds. NCSM Call for Speakers for the 2024 NCSM Conference

In 2024, NCSM will celebrate its 56th Annual Conference in Chicago, September 23-25, 2024 with the theme Breaking Barriers with Bold Mathematics Leadership. The four strands are the following: Disrupting the Status Quo, Overcoming Challenges, Eliminating Structural Cultural and/or Instructional Barriers, and Breaking Through: Coaching to Support Change. It’s time to submit proposals for this conference. Learn more and submit your proposal. Deadline for submission is December 1.

TODOS Live! November 30, 2023

Join the TODOS Live! on Thursday, November 30 at 4:00 PM Pacific titled Queer High School Students and the Teaching of Mathematics for Social Justice presented by Weverton Ataide Pinheiro. This presentation will explore Queer high school students' participation in teaching mathematics for social justice (TMSJ). The study aimed to introduce TMSJ to Queer students to understand the injustices they face in their education due to gender and/or sexuality. Go to the full description and sign up today!

PD Committee Features Mathematics and Families

The PD Committee highlights a TODOS Live! from June 2020, Rethinking the Summer Slide: A TODOS Live! Event FOR PARENTS and Teachers by Maria del Rosario Zavala. This session discusses how to rethink the summer slide from an asset-based perspective, drawing on the strengths of students and their most valuable learning resource, their families! Parents will leave with practical ideas of how to evaluate online resources, games, and household activities as part of supporting their children.

Introduction to Advocacy: AMS Welcomes Students

Thirty students across grades 9-12 engaged in collaborative learning in both Spanish and English with AMS leaders, Fairfax County Public Schools staff from both Lewis High School and the Office of Curriculum and Instruction, and community partners from TODOS: Mathematics for ALL. This event was part of a broader series of Lewis Leadership Program events designed to foster joy and curiosity in mathematics among students who experience systemic barriers to enrichment. M3 Challenge: Helping All Students See Value of Math

MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge is a free online contest for high school juniors and seniors that awards $100,000+ annually ($1.85 million+ to date). Teams of 3-5 collaborate in-person or online to solve an open-ended problem in 14 hours; teachers need not be present. Extra awards are given for (optional) code. Finalist teams get an all-expenses paid trip to the in-person final event in New York City. See rules, resources, and registration info. Register by February 23, 2024. Challenge weekend is March 1-4, 2024.

Three New AMTE MTE Podcasts Are Available

Three new MTE podcasts are available: Are We Preparing Agents of Change or Instruments of Inequity? Teaching Toward Antiracist Mathematics Teacher Education (Joel Amidon, Anne Marie Marshall, and Rebecca E. Smith), Dilemmas and Design Principles in Planning for Justice-Oriented Community-Based Mathematical Modeling Lessons (Jennifer M. Seeing Through the Fog of Misinformation

Swirling misinformation and confusing narratives about math education policy have become so prevalent that mainstream media has begun latching on to low-hanging rhetoric and incomplete facts. It’s detracting from necessary updates and forward thinking that are sorely needed for students to succeed in high school and college-level math. In this month’s blog, Just Equation's executive director Pamela Burdman dives into the complexities and consequences of the math education policy debates making national news.

Reconceptualizing Language for Math Learner

ZDM-Mathematics Education is hosting a webinar on Special Issue: Reconceptualizing the relationship between language, mathematics, and the learner in mathematics education research, to be held on December 13 from 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM Pacific and moderated by Gabriele Kaiser, Editor-in-Chief of ZDM-Mathematics Education. Mini-Grant for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics

There is a new grant through the Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics (CURM) to provide support with funding and professional development for an academic-year research group. Groups are collaborations between faculty and students at two institutions, one that is a Bachelor’s-granting institution, and one that is a 2-year or community college. For more information, visit the CURM website or contact the program director. Deadline to apply is December 15.
