We are approaching the end of another calendar year and in just a few days 2024 will be here. I’ve been reminded of my experiences with the teachings of Gandhi over this past month. I taught a course in a summer institute called “Building Peaceful Communities” for over 10 years. The course that I taught was called “Towards a Curriculum of Community.” The concept of community was primarily focused on school communities - such as classrooms, schools themselves, or communities that formed around schools - however, each student in the class worked to define … Go to the full message.

PD Committee Features Rehumanizing Assessment

The PD Committee features TODOS resources related to rehumanizing assessment by highlighting a TODOS Podcast from Season 1: Rethinking Assessment with Amanda Ruiz and Vanson Nguyen. What is meaningful mathematics assessment, particularly for high school and undergraduate mathematics courses? Is our current pandemic a good time to rethink assessment practices? This episode features audio from the webinar on April 9, 2020 and audio from a conversation they had a few weeks later. They stir up some ideas and share some examples.

TODOS Live! January 18, 2024

Lochani Senia will present "Learn from everybody’s strengths": Developing Confident Math Modelers through Routines and Formative Assessment on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 4:00 PM Pacific. This session introduces participants to mathematical modeling routines for grades 3-5 that develop and formatively assess modeling competencies, and cultivate positive mathematical identities and a sense of agency in students. TODOS has been very active this year supporting a variety of activities and events and is continuing to be active in advocating for equity and high quality mathematics. You are encouraged to make an end of year contribution to TODOS to provide continued support for its efforts to promote social justice and address antiracism in mathematics education. TODOS is a 501(c)(3) organization, and your contribution to TODOS is tax deductible. Donate by December 31, and your donation will be applied to the 2023 tax year. UArizona CRR Presents 20th Annual MEAD Conference

The UArizona Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) is hosting the 20th annual Mathematics Educator Appreciation Day Conference (MEAD) on Saturday, January 27, 2024. MEAD 2024 will be HYBRID, with both in-person and online components. The keynote speaker will be Steve Leinwand, recipient of both NCSM National Leadership and NCTM Lifetime Achievement Awards. MEAD 2024 is free for all Arizona educators and $125 for everyone else. Go to details and registration for more information.

Disparities in Advanced Math Placement

Just Equations and The Education Trust released a report examining the racial and economic disparities in advanced math placement among high-achieving students. Opportunities Denied addresses these disparities by offering solutions ensuring equitable math opportunities to all high-achieving math students.
