From the TODOS President

Happy 2024 to each of you. I am a fan of the writing of the late Richard Wagamese. Each time I read Wagamese’s writings I am inspired and I learn something new. The writing I share with you today is coming from One Drum: Stories and Ceremonies for a Planet (2019), published by Douglas and McIntyre (2013) Ltd. In the book Wagamese recounts a legend about a time when the animals decided they needed a leader. PD Committee Features Social Justice

In February, the PD Committee will be featuring TODOS Resources related to Teaching Mathematics for Social Justice (TMSJ). Today we highlight a TODOS Live! from December 2022, Bringing Social Justice to the Upper Elementary Classroom: From Student Questions to Taking Action. TMSJ is about the relationships teachers build with and among students; the teaching practices that help them do that; and the goals to develop positive social, cultural, and mathematics identities—as authors, actors, and doers.

TODOS Blog on Environmental Issues

The TODOS Blog Committee is pleased to share the first installment in a series on environmental issues, Our World, Our Place, Our Home, Our Responsibility. We hope you will join us as we examine these issues through shared values and mathematics. Also, the committee is seeking an additional member to serve on the writing team for its Alerta! blog. 2024 TODOS: Mathematics for ALL Board Elections

The 2024 TODOS Board Elections will be held on February 1-29. The slate of candidates for Vice President and one Director position and their information are available on the website. Election voting is online and will be held during the month of February. TODOS members will receive an email ballot on February 1. For any questions or a missing ballot, contact the Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee.

TODOS Virtual Leadership Institute, June 4-5, 2024 

Save the date! The 2024 TODOS Virtual Leadership Institute will be held Tuesday, June 4 from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm Pacific and Wednesday, June 5 from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm with the theme Exploring Avenues of Action for Anti-Racist Mathematics Education. Registration will be $80 for the two days, and the co-facilitators are Rachel Benoff, Gloria Brown Brooks, and Heather Lindfors Navarro. More information will be included in the February 2024 Enews.

TODOS Exhibit at NCTM Regionals in Seattle

Everyone Belongs Here is the theme of the 2024 NCTM Regionals that will be held February 7-9 at the Seattle Convention Center in Seattle. If you plan to attend, consider volunteering to staff the TODOS Exhibit Booth during the conference. You will have the opportunity to encourage attendees to join TODOS. In addition, the TODOS Book will be on display for attendees to peruse. Sign up today!

ICME 15 in Sydney, Australia

All mathematics educators world-wide are invited to Sydney, Australia for the 15th International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME-15), July 7-14, 2024. There are Topic Study Groups (themes or tracks) on many topics, including (1) Ethnomathematics and First Nations/Indigenous people’s mathematics and mathematics education; (2) Social and political dimensions of mathematics education; and Culture, language and ethnicity in mathematics education. Visit the ICME-15 website and peruse the range of stimulating lectures, keynotes, and other activities. 

UArizona CRR Presents 20th Annual MEAD Conference

The UArizona Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) is hosting the 20th annual Mathematics Educator Appreciation Day Conference (MEAD) on Saturday, January 27, 2024. MEAD 2024 will be HYBRID, with both in-person and online components. The keynote speaker will be Steve Leinwand, recipient of both NCSM National Leadership and NCTM Lifetime Achievement Awards. MEAD 2024 is free for all Arizona educators and $125 for everyone else. Go to details and registration for more information.

M3 Challenge: A Rewarding Experience for All Students

MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge is a free online contest for high school juniors and seniors that awards $100,000+ annually. Teams collaborate in-person or online to solve an open-ended problem in 14 hours; teacher need not be present. Finalist teams get an all-expenses paid trip to the in-person final event in New York City. See rules, resources, and registration info. Register by February 23; challenge weekend is March 1-4.

Two-Day Summit for High School Math Teachers

Planning High School Mathematics Reform: A Learning, Sharing and Working Conference With Steve Leinwand & Eric Milou, will be held March 14-15 at the Courtyard Marriott Downtown. This conference is to celebrate you, support you, and learn and plan together with you. Focus sessions for the two days include Curriculum Reform, Instruction Reform, and Assessment Reform with structured time to start and develop and review plans to move forward.
