TODOS-MET Professional Development Grant

Apply for the fourth annual professional development grant co-sponsored by TODOS and NCTM! Fostering Support of Mathematics Learning in Multilingual Classrooms provides financial assistance to PreK-12 schools for in-service to increase expertise in fostering support of multi-language development when teaching mathematics. Grant maximum: $4000. Applicants must include a TODOS member and an NCTM member by the date of application. Deadline: November 1, 2020.

GAS 7: Poetry, Art & Music Features Larry Lesser

Larry Lesser opened the first eight minutes of the newest episode of Gypsy Art Show (GAS) 7: Poetry, Art & Music, Belinda Subraman’s poetry/art/music video zine. During the interview, he cites two poems that were published in Teaching for Excellence and Equity in Mathematics (TEEM), TEEM Vol. 10, No. 1 and TEEM Vol. 11, No. 2. Larry is a UTEP Distinguished Teaching Professor who has nationally published 130+ songs and is the Associate Editor of TEEM.

Big Ideas for Confronting Racism in Education

EdWeek focused its September Big Ideas issue on Confronting Racism in Education. Many teachers are seeking the tools or the support they need to address curriculum, practices, and policies that have long denied Black students the same opportunities to thrive as their white peers. Thus EdWeek chose to dedicate the entire Big Ideas special report to addressing anti-Black systemic racism in schools. One of the articles is titled Dismantling Systemic Racism in Schools: 8 Big Ideas by Elizabeth Rich.

Mathematicians of the African Diaspora

On October 9, 2020 there was an unveiling of the updated website “Mathematicians of the African Diaspora,'' a site first created by Scott Williams (SUNY Buffalo) in 1997. After Williams retired in 2008, a team of Black mathematicians formed to continue his legacy by updating the site and this is their culmination of the 10-year project. MATHAD is dedicated to promoting and highlighting the contributions of members of the African diaspora to mathematics, especially contributions to current mathematical research.

Coalition for English Learner Equity

The Coalition for English Learner Equity (CELE) is a growing coalition of activists, leaders, and educators working to advance equity and justice for linguistically and culturally diverse students. Deficit views of historically marginalized children, their families, and communities based on race, class, language, and culture persist in education. CELE calls for all individuals and groups working to improve the education system to read the statement and join them in reimagining education.

WestEd Study for 8th Grade Algebra 1 Teachers

WestEd would like to invite teachers of 8th grade Algebra 1 to access FREE distance learning online software resources that may be able to support their students’ in-class/at-home Algebra learning. The Graspable Mathematics (GM) software is a digital algebra notation tool that allows students to dynamically experiment with algebraic expressions. Building Educational Equity Indicator Systems

How can education leaders monitor and measure progress toward educational equity? They recognize the importance of ensuring that students of all backgrounds and abilities have an equal chance to succeed. This goal of educational equity has been historically difficult to achieve but is timely now. Join the National Academies on Tuesday, October 27th at 11:00 AM Pacific Time for the first part of this webinar series to learn more about what is needed to monitor educational equity.

National Math Festival News

The National Math Festival September 2020 News features three items: Introduction of the free weekly math puzzles for kids grades K-12, a new Facebook Group (find family math inspiration at home), and the 2021 National Math Festival that is going online. The title of the first issue of the free weekly math puzzles is Math and Cats. The Facebook math parent group plans to encourage, inspire, and challenge families to see math in new and exciting ways. The National Math Festival will launch in December 2020.
