Deadline in 10 Days!

Have you submitted your proposal to speak at the TODOS 2018 Conference that will be held June 21-23, 2018, in the Phoenix metro areas? It’s not too late, but don’t wait much longer. All proposals are due September 30, 2017. Work with a colleague to submit a proposal that highlights your collaborative efforts in advocating for equity and social justice. Select from five topics and from different presentation formats! Read the information in the Call for Proposals and submit today.

Apply for a $4,000 School Grant

Do you have multilingual classrooms in your school? Would you like financial assistance for professional development to increase your understanding and expertise in fostering support of multi-language development when teaching mathematics? Apply for the TODOS/NCTM MET Grant for an award of up to $4,000. Go to the website for the grant guidelines and documents including the application. Deadline to submit is November 30th.

Remembering Carol Abe Edwards

Carol Edward’s family will be celebrating her life on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at the Chandler Gilbert Community College in Chandler, AZ. Go to the flyer for additional information. TODOS established the Carol A. Edwards Speaker Fund in her memory. This fund provides partial support for TODOS members speaking as part of a TODOS strand at conferences. Go to the contribution form (login required) to make a donation.

TODOS Live! Season 7 Has Begun

The 7th season of TODOS Live! has begun.  The first session was held September 9th presented by José Francisco Sala García titled Effective Teaching Practices to Support English Language Learners. If you missed the session, you can access it online. Future TODOS Live! sessions are being scheduled. Information will be sent via the listserv, or you can go to the TODOS Live! page for updates regarding future sessions.

Are You Attending the NCTM Regional in Orlando?

The NCTM Regional in Orlando is less than a month away! This year, TODOS and the Benjamin Banneker Association will jointly sponsor an exhibit booth at both regionals. Also, many TODOS members will be presenters. If you plan to attend the regional in Orlando, consider volunteering to staff the booth. This is your opportunity to share your passion for TODOS with attendees and colleagues and encourage them to join TODOS.

Jim Ewing: Dancing Professor

Have you ever had a professor invite students to dance with him/her before class began? TODOS member Jim Ewing at Stephen F. Austin State University is such a professor. He says “My students said they had negative experiences with math and I had a negative experience with dancing, so I figured why not dance with them.” Read the front page article "Dancing professor quells fears" in The Pine Log.

TODOS Proposals for CAMT 2018: Due Sept. 23rd!

Are you planning to attend the 2018 Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (CAMT) that will be held in Houston, TX, July 16-18, 2018? Consider submitting a proposal to speak at CAMT as part of the TODOS Strand. The theme for the conference is #gotmath! Go to the Proposal Guidelines for CAMT Strand for complete information. NCSM Elections! Remember to Vote!

NCSM Elections are open and will close October 15th for the following positions: President Elect, Second Vice-President, and Regional Directors for Canada, Southern 1, and Western 1. All NCSM members will vote for President Elect and Second Vice-President and members residing in the above regions will be voting for their regional director. TODOS members who are candidates include: Mona Toncheff, President Elect; Lynn Columba, Second Vice-President; Marj Farris, Canada; and Samantha Wuttig, Western 1.

Critical Issues in Mathematics Education

The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) announces the workshop: Critical Issues in Mathematics Education 2018: Access to mathematics by opening doors for students currently excluded from mathematics (K-12, undergraduate, and graduate education). The workshop will be held at MSRI at UC Berkeley February 21-23, 2018. Consider submitting an abstract on relevant programmatic efforts and innovative research. Submission deadline is October 13, 2017.

Northwest Math Conference: October 12-14

October appears to be conference month for many state and regional conferences. The Northwest Math Conference (NWMC) is a joint conference sponsored by the state or provincial math teachers’ council of British Columbia, Washington, or Oregon. This year, the conference will be held in Portland. TODOS will have an exhibit booth at the conference. Sign up to staff the booth in Portland!

OCTM Conference: October 18-20

This year, TODOS will have an exhibit booth at the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Conference that will be held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, OH. The theme is Columbus Connections: Connecting US with Mathematics Education. If you are attending the conference, support TODOS by volunteering at the TODOS booth in Columbus. We need you!

CMC-S Conference: October 27-28

The California Mathematics Council – South Conference will be held in October this year in Palm Springs. TODOS will again have a booth in the exhibit hall. In addition, many TODOS members will be presenting. Consider volunteering your time to staff the TODOS booth in Palm Springs. It is your opportunity to support TODOS and encourage your colleagues to become members.

VOICES: Communicating STEM through Song

The debut of an NSF-funded conference on using educational song in STEM will be held online September 27-28. The conference titled Virtual Ongoing Interdisciplinary Conferences on Educating with Song (VOICES) focuses on the use of song in teaching STEM subjects at the college level (including AP courses). VOICES will present the latest research, pedagogy, and practitioner perspectives on effectively communicating the ideas of STEM through song. Illustrative Mathematics Open Resources, Grades 6-8

The curriculum was authored by Illustrative Mathematics under the leadership of Bill McCallum, refined based on feedback, and freely available. Illustrative Mathematics 6-8 Math is a problem-based curriculum that fosters discussion-filled classrooms and encourages students to show their mathematical thinking in multiple ways. The curriculum, which is being published as an Open Educational Resource under Creative Commons license CC BY, is available in both digital and print formats. As the new school year is underway, here is a reminder of the goals which define the purpose of the TODOS SIG - Educators of Native American Students (EONAS). The EONAS website in TODOS also includes additional information about the SIG. If you are interested in joining EONAS and willing to support any of the activities, including working on the website, staffing a booth at a conference, or getting EONAS news out in any media, please contact chair Richard Sgarlotti. Elections are coming up and EONAS will be looking for people to serve.

Honoring Linda Fulmore

Linda Fulmore, TODOS's Treasurer and Chair of the PD Committee, was awarded the AATM Copper Apple Award for Leadership in Mathematics  on Sept. 16, 2017.  She was honored for her leadership at the local, state, and national levels and for her dedication to ensuring that all teachers and students have access to quality mathematics teaching and learning.
