From the TODOS President

I start this writing with a quote from the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyere, Tanzania's first president (1961-1985). "It can be donem play your part!" Nyere is described in a variety of ways in numerous writings as an anti-colonial activist, political theorist, and politician. The way that I've come to know this leader is through my ongoing relationships with Tanzanian colleagues. Julius Nyere's first profession was teaching, and hence the term "mwalimu" (which is teacher in kiswahili). Nominate Yourself or a TODOS Member

Do you know a TODOS member who would bring valuable experience, perspective, and judgment to the TODOS Board of Directors? Identify talented, energetic individuals who are qualified to assume the position of Vice President or Director. Nominees must have been a TODOS member in good standing for at least one year prior to the close of the nomination period. Nominations are open September 1 to October 15. Fostering Support for Multilingual Learners

TODOS and NCTM are funding its 7th annual MET grant that provides financial assistance to PreK-12 schools for in-service to increase understanding and expertise in fostering support of multi-language development in mathematics. Grant maximum: $4000. The applicant must have at least one NCTM member and one TODOS member who teaches at the school. These memberships must be current at the time of application. Professional Development Committee Features Podcast

The TODOS PD Committee is featuring the TODOS podcast from Season 1 where two teachers from the Nepantla Teachers Community share their thoughts on finding community. This podcast speaks to the question of building communities to sustain ourselves and each other. The two founders of the Nepantla Teachers Community speak to the roles of identity, tensions, and finding your people to sustain yourself in mathematics teaching.

NCTM Annual Meeting and NCTM Research Conference

The NCTM 2023 Annual Meeting & Exposition will be held October 25-28 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. Connect with thousands of mathematics education professionals. The NCTM 2023 Research Conference will be held October 24-25 at the Washington Marriott at Metro Center and the Convention Center. Early registration for both closes August 30. TODOS will have a booth at the NCTM Meeting (see more information in the Sept. Enews).

Private Tour of the Molina Gallery: October 26

TODOS members are invited to a private tour of the Molina Gallery at the National Museum of American History, which highlights key concepts, moments and biographies that illuminate the historical and cultural legacies of the Latinx communities in the U.S. For those interested and able to attend, please fill out this interest form. The tour is scheduled for 3pm Wednesday, October 26 prior to the opening keynote at the NCTM Annual Conference in DC. Space is limited.

At the Center for Mathematics and Teaching, we write materials that are accessible to all learners, including English learners. We are proud to announce that MathLinks: Core (2nd ed) Grades 6-8 is available to pilot and use now. Read about this program and its guiding principles. Tenure Track Position Open at SDSU

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at San Diego State University (SDSU) invites applications for a tenure track position at the assistant professor level in data science/statistics education. Candidates should have a solid background in statistics and mathematics/statistics/data science education, strong potential for research, and plans for extramural funding. Resources for Students' Actuarial Exam Journey

The Society of Actuaries (SOA) and Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) designed the Diversity Exam Reimbursement Program and the Needs-Based Exam Reimbursement Program to provide financial assistance to eligible students pursuing actuarial exams, as well as encourage the growth and expansion of the profession. Learn more about eligibility for either of these programs to share with your students.

Call for Book Chapters

How do approximations of practice forefront or shadow issues of equitable teaching? Consider submitting a chapter in the upcoming book Promoting Equity in Approximations of Practice for Preservice Mathematics Teachers. The goal is to bring together the leaders in this work and to collectively make space to consider more equitable mathematics instruction. For more information go to the Call for Chapters. Proposals are due October 1.
