From the TODOS President

I am writing this contribution on the day that nominations for a Director and Vice President for the TODOS Board of Directors close. I am also preparing to attend the 2023 NCTM Annual Meeting and Exposition. These two events have caused me to reflect on how I came to know about TODOS and the mentors that have crossed my path. TODOS Is Looking for a Managing Director

TODOS: Mathematics for ALL has had significant impact in the mathematics education community over the past 20 years and is now at a place where an infrastructure that will support TODOS can broaden its influence. TODOS will hire a part-time Managing Director who will work remotely and will support and manage the annual and daily operations of TODOS. PD Committee Features Resources on SEL

The Professional Development Committee features TODOS Resources related to Mathematics and Social/Emotional Learning by highlighting a TODOS 2021 Conference presentation by Marian Dingle and Hema Khokai entitled "Tear-Free Math Class: Activating Agency through Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL)". TODOS Live! November 7 at 4:00 PM Pacific

The next TODOS Live! will be held on Tuesday, November 7. Sheila Orr, Sarah DiMaria, and Carlee Madis will speak on Creating Community-Based, Discipline-Rich End Products for Project-Based Learning. The speakers will begin with a framework designed to support mathematically-rigorous projects that also provide authentic and relevant opportunities. Sign-up now!

Deadline to Apply for $4000 Is November 1

The TODOS-NCTM MET grant provides financial assistance to PreK-12 schools for in-service to increase understanding and expertise in fostering support of multi-language development in mathematics. Maximum funding is $4000, and applicants must have at least one current NCTM member and one current TODOS member. Go to the application information. Deadline is coming up--November 1, 2023.

Are You a Blogger? Join the TODOS Blog Committee

TODOS has a volunteer opportunity for anyone who loves to blog and can generate some inspiring and informational blogs for TODOS! The TODOS blog committee is seeking an additional member to serve on the writing team for its Alerta! blog. Go to the TODOS website and view the current blog posts. TODOS Events at NCTM/NCSM

TODOS will be very active during the 2023 NCTM Annual Meeting and the 55th Annual NCSM Conference. TODOS supports the NCTM Game Night on Wednesday, October 25; sponsors the TODOS Salsa Party on Thursday, October 26; presents as part of the TODOS Strand October 26-28; has an exhibit booth at both NCTM and NCSM; and sponsors the TODOS Student Awards on October 28. Volunteer at the TODOS Booths at NCTM/NCSM

Sign up to staff the TODOS Booth any time during NCTM or NCSM in Washington, DC. There are many time slots available at both conferences. At NCTM, in addition to being in the Exhibit Hall, TODOS will have a table at the NCTM Game Night and one at the TODOS Salsa Party to check memberships and recruit members. Your support and dedicated efforts are welcomed and appreciated. Encourage your friends and colleagues to join TODOS!

TODOS Video Project 

TODOS has recorded the recent TODOS Live! sessions and most of the ones in the past. Also, the TODOS 2021 Virtual Conference sessions were recorded as were many of the other leadership sessions sponsored by TODOS. These recordings have been part of the TODOS Video Project. Many of your colleagues have been involved with the TODOS Video Project. If you are interested in learning more about the project or in joining, contact the Project Leaders.

Support TODOS at CMC-S

Are you attending the CMC-South Conference in Palm Springs to be held November 3-4? If so, consider volunteering to staff the TODOS Booth. It’s a great opportunity to meet people visiting the booth and informing them about TODOS and why they should join. Stop by the TODOS booth and pick up a TODOS refrigerator magnet and browse the resources.

Empower Students to Investigate Real-World Math

The Modeling the Future Challenge, a program of The Actuarial Foundation, is an exciting high school competition, in which students conduct their own research project using real-world data to tackle important issues. The program features NASA and FEMA climate data and insights, with students competing for $55,000 in scholarships, and each winning team’s teacher receiving a $1,000 Helen Galt Educator Award supported by Prudential Financial. Registration closes November 17.

Preview: New Research on Math Narratives

The Gates Foundation has partnered with Wonder: Strategies for Good and Goodwin Simon Strategic Research to conduct research with over 300 6th-9th grade students, math teachers, and parents, to understand the social and cultural narratives that impact how students, particularly low-income Black and Latino students, feel and think about learning math. Results will be presented at a webinar on Monday, November 6 at 10:00 AM Pacific. Go to the registration link for details and to sign up.

AMTE Podcast: When Only White Students Talk

Speakers Sunghwan Byun, Niral Shah, and Daniel Reinholz will introduce a teacher learning practice called EQUIP-ing, which aims to foster sociopolitical noticing by leveraging EQUIP, an equity-oriented classroom observation tool. They will detail their iterations of EQUIP-ing to a field-based Number Talk experience in a secondary mathematics methods course with 25 White prospective teachers. Go to the podcast information that includes a more detailed description of what the speakers observed.

Call to Action

Twelve math organizations, including TODOS, have issued a collective Call to Action along with key recommendations to improve math experiences and outcomes for high school and college students. Each recommendation begins with a general statement and includes guidance for analysis of relevant aggregated and disaggregated data. A description of the expected result follows, and specific actions to enact each recommendation are listed for distinct stakeholder groups. 

Quantitative Justice Via R

Through its new Engaged Pedagogy Series, the AMS provides mathematical sciences faculty with experiences and resources that strengthen them as professionals and empower their engagement with students learning mathematics. Scheduled November 17-19, this online workshop will introduce participants to the widely-used statistical computing and graphics software R, with a focus on integrating social justice topics into teaching mathematics.
