Volume 17, Issue 3 Looking for volunteer opportunities? March 2024

From the TODOS President

I come to the end of my term as President of TODOS: Mathematics for ALL on April 30, 2024. It had been approximately 10 years since I’d served on the TODOS Board when I was elected in 2021 as President-Elect. Over the 10 years I’d observed the growth of TODOS activities. In this enews I will share some of the activities that the amazing volunteers with TODOS have completed over the past 3 years. I focus on these particular activities only as a way of providing background to the emergence of some organizational changes that occurred during the 2023 - 2024 year, TODOS’ 20th Anniversary. … Go to the full message.

TODOS Live! TODAY (3/20)! Using Storybooks to Engage Children in Math

We will discuss how teachers and teacher educators can use Dazzling Us with Data to engage young children in math and social justice conversations and activities. This book, from the Powerful Mathematicians Who Changed the World series, was written for prek-2 children, teachers, and families. Edited by Christa Jackson and illustrated by Estrella Bascuñan, the Powerful Mathematicians Who Changed the World book series centers underrepresented mathematicians we do not typically hear or learn about in school.  Register here.

Remembering Donald Tunstall

We are heartbroken to announce that Donald Tunstall passed early this month. Texas Instruments has donated hand-held calculators for the TODOS Student Awards since the late 2000s. Since 2013, Donald has been TODOS’ TI contact person. He attended many Student Award ceremonies and handed the calculators to the students. He often spoke with the students about their current efforts and future dreams that they mentioned on their application form. We will always remember his smile. See Donald in action.

Remembering Luis Moll

On Tuesday, March 5, TODOS learned that Dr. Luis Carlos Moll had passed away. Dr. Moll’s academic endeavors always centered on social and educational justice for minoritized families, children, and youth, and his theoretical framework of families’ Funds of Knowledge, developed with educators and anthropologists, has been used to generate policy and educational strategies that prioritize the well-being and best practices for Latinx and diverse populations. Many of his students worldwide are continuing his legacy as educators, professors, and researchers. Full Obituary.
