Joint NCSM/TODOS Social Justice Position Statement

NCSM and TODOS will present their joint position statement, Mathematics Education Through the Lens of Social Justice: Acknowledgments, Actions, and Accountability, at the NCSM Conference in April. The paper will be available at the TODOS Booth and distributed at the TODOS 2016 Conference. You can download a copy for you to use, share, and discuss with your friends and colleagues. TODOS is planning webinars in the future to highlight the contents of the paper.

TODOS 2016 Conference Update

TODOS 2016 will be upon us in three months. If you haven't registered, do so now. There are only 15 spaces left as of March 15th. Over 280 registrations have been received and the maximum is 300. Go to the conference website to see highlights of the conference and to register. In addition to the conference itself, the TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award will be announced on Thursday, June 23rd, and the Student Award Ceremony will occur on Friday, June 24th. Hope to see you there!

TODOS Speakers in Demand! Submit a Proposal!

TODOS has been invited to organize strands of speakers for the 2017 NCTM Annual Meeting, the 2016 Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference, the 2016 California Mathematics Council-South Conference, and the 2016 California Mathematics Council-North Conference.  Read submission procedures and submit proposals by the stated deadlines.  Share you knowledge in advocating for equity and excellence in mathematics education for all students! 

TODOS Live! Update

The next TODOS Live! may not occur until after the NCSM/NCTM conferences this April. A list of previous sessions that have been recorded is available on the TODOS Live! page. TODOS Live! is planning the season for the 2016-2017 school year. These webinars are scheduled in the late afternoon/early evening in order for classroom teachers to attend. If you wish to give a webinar, contact the TODOS Live! chair.

TODOS Speakers and Events at NCSM and NCTM

Updated information on TODOS Activities at NCSM/NCTM is on the TODOS Website. Download the information on TODOS Speakers in the Equity Strand and Members who are featured/highlighted speakers plus information on the Members' meeting, Student Awards, and the Salsa Party. If you are presenting at NCSM/NCTM, send TODOS the session information to include on the website.

Volunteer to Staff TODOS Booth at NCSM/NCTM

This is your opportunity to be active in TODOS and promote TODOS to your friends and colleagues in Oakland and San Francisco. Volunteer for a two-hour slot or more at either NCSM or NCTM (or both) and interact with conference attendees. You can meet new friends, encourage your friends to join TODOS, and share your passion about TODOS and its mission and goals. There are two pages in the sign-up sheet, one for NCSM and one for NCTM.

TODOS at ICME 13

Four additional names are added to the list of TODOS members attending ICME 13 in Hamburg: Marta Civil, Alice Cook (who received a travel grant from NCTM), Francis (Skip) Fennell, and Rick Scott. TODOS Members are leading Topic Study Groups, featured speakers, and have submitted proposals to speak. If you are a TODOS member and plan to attend, send a message to the editor to be included in the next Enews. In the June Enews, all TODOS members attending ICME 13 will be listed.

Science, Naturally Seeks Math Submissions

Science, Naturally, a Washington, DC-based publishing company, is looking for submissions for their engaging math books for kids in grades 3-9. Science, Naturally is committed to increasing math literacy by exploring and demystifying these topics. They are looking for manuscripts that provide fun approaches to connecting the math kids learn in school with the real world. Royalties paid, no advances. Diverse voices and first-time authors welcome.

Presidential Awards 

A great teacher can change a student's life! Did you have one that changed yours? There is less than one month until nominations close for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. There are many TODOS Members who are exemplary teachers. Nominate them by the April 1st deadline! Applications are due May 1st.

Teaching and Teacher Education Early Career Award

Congratulations to Higinio Dominguez for receiving the following American Education Research Association (AERA) award: 2016 Division K, Teaching and Teacher Education Early Career Award. He will receive the award in Washington, DC, at the AERA 2016 meeting.
