TODOS-CASIO Webinar on January 26 The first webinar in the TODOS-CASIO series is titled Messy Data: Data Science for High School Students presented by Suyen Machado and Kyndall Brown on Wednesday, January 26 at 4:00 PM Pacific. Participants will learn about the Introduction to Data Science (IDS) high school mathematics course in which students collect their own data using hand-held devices and examine data from formal sources. Students who took the IDS course showed an increase in their understanding of statistical concepts. Register today! |
TODOS-CASIO Webinar on February 9 The second webinar in this series is titled Data Science: A New Gateway to Identity and Belonging in Quantitative Fields to be presented by Tanya LaMar on Wednesday February 9 at 4:00 PM Pacific. This session will share on the K-12 data science movement—with special attention towards the implications for equity—as well as preliminary findings from a study investigating data science learning as a potential pathway toward feelings of identity and belonging within quantitative fields. TODOS-CASIO Webinar on February 23 The third TODOS-CASIO Webinar in this series is titled Data Literacy in Early Childhood Mathematics Classrooms by Jennifer Ward and Courtney Koestler on Wednesday, February 23 at 4:00 PM Pacific. What does it mean to become data literate for children? What does data literacy look like in early childhood and elementary spaces? Equity/Inclusion for LGBTQ+ Students The LBGTQ+ Community Forum will be held on Thursday, January 27 at 4:30 PM Pacific. A key purpose of the town hall is to launch a Special Interest Group (SIG) focused on advocating for equity and inclusion in mathematics education for LGBTQ+ students. All those interested are invited to discuss visions for the SIG and to provide input on its goals and bylaws. Register now! |

Celebrating the Rev. Dr. Dorothy Strong The Rev. Dr. Dorothy Strong, one of NCSM’s founding members in 1968 and NCSM President from 1977 to 1979, passed away on January 2. She served as the Director of Mathematics for Chicago Public Schools and fiercely advocated for equity for all students. She was a founding member and first president of BBA and was elected to the NCTM Board of Directors from 1987-1990. She’ll be missed. |
MTE Call for Submissions #1 The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) has two calls for articles. The Mathematics Teacher Educator Journal invites submissions to a new article format for the journal, Perspectives on Practice. Manuscripts for Perspectives on Practice will focus on an innovation in a previously-published MTE article and describe how it was interpreted, iterated, or improved in practice. MTE Call for Submissions #2 The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) publication Connections is seeking brief manuscripts related to the integration of mathematics teacher education with other disciplines or areas within teacher education, preservice and inservice. Mathematics should have a key focus, and connected disciplines or areas could include STEM, dual language immersion, literacy, and special education, amongst others. CANMEE Lesson Study Symposium: February 10 The California Action Network for Mathematics Excellence and Equity (CANMEE) is sponsoring a virtual lesson study symposium on February 10 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM Pacific Time on “Focal Students: How does focusing on a few students improve learning for all students?” Including focal students in the lesson study cycle and attending to both mathematics and equity can make a difference. Registration is complimentary. |
CANMEE’s Equity Commentator Course CANMEE is sponsoring an Equity Commentator Course that begins February 17. The goal of the course is to gain and deepen equity commentators’ understanding of how to support a lesson study team’s inquiry into mathematics education with an equity lens.
