October Readings in Call for a Collective Action

Have you read at least one of the articles in TEEM 7, the Special Issue, Mathematics Education Through the Lens of Social Justice? It's not too late to begin. One of the targeted questions asks readers to think about changing the paradigm of teaching and learning mathematics to one that utilizes the mathematics of people and their communities and ties mathematics to the world. Contribute your thoughts in the October Social Circle.

TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award

Nominations are open for TODOS members to consider submitting a packet for a deserving mathematics educator. The TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the quality of mathematics education provided to all students, in particular to Latina/o students. Go to the website for a description of the award with a list of past recipients. Contact the Co-Chairs for additional information.

November Reading in Call for a Collective Action

The reading for November 2016 recommended by NCTM is The Impact of Identity in K-8 Mathematics: Rethinking Equity-Based Practices, a book by Julia Aguirre, Karen Mayfield-Ingram, and Danny Martin. If you don't have a copy of the book, you may want to borrow one or purchase it. The targeted questions for this reading are included in the attached. The Social Circle for this reading will be added to the TODOS website in November.

TODOS Live!

Register for one of the November TODOS Live! sessions to be held at 4:30 p.m. PST on November 10th by TODOS President Diane Kinch and TODOS Director Kyndall Brown titled "Statistics: A Pathway through the Standards." This session will give teachers a sense of the continuity in content as the study of data moves from elementary through middle school to high school by examing similar data displayed in graphs. NCTM Elections! Remember to Vote!

The NCTM elections are open and will close October 31st for the following positions: President-Elect, one Director, High School Level, and three Directors, At-Large. TODOS members who are candidates include the following: Robert Q. Berry III and Nora Ramirez, President-Elect; David Ebert and Jason Slowbe, Director High School Level; and Vanessa Cleaver, Linda Ruiz Davenport, and DeAnn Huinker, Director At-Large. If you haven't voted yet, find your election email and vote today!

SSMA, ATMNYC, and AMATYC Conferences          

Diane Kinch will speak as TODOS President at the School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA) Conference October 20th-22nd in Phoenix and the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) Conference November 17th-20th in Denver  Susie Håkansson will be the TODOS speaker at the Association of Teachers of Mathematics of New York City (ATMNYC) Conference November 19th New York City. 

From Education Trust: What do Black Teachers Say?

Over the past 18 months, the Education Trust K-12 research team has pulled together focus groups with teachers of color, Black and Latino teachers particularly, to learn more about their experiences in classrooms and schools. In light of recent reports that have pointed to the declining numbers of teachers of color in the workforce, Ashley Griffin previews Ed Trust's upcoming brief, which will feature the thoughts and findings from these focus groups.

Annual Assessments Under ESSA

How can state advocates ensure that annual assessments are aligned with state standards and measuring student progress consistently across classrooms, schools, and districts? Consider these equity-focused questions, pulled together by Education Trust and see their primers on the other components of ESSA. Ed Trust was founded for one reason and one reason alone: to push, prod, and cajole our country toward educational justice.

TODOS Strand Speakers at CMC-N Conference

Susie Håkansson, Nora Ramirez, Jeanne Ramos, and Angela Thompson with Michelle Hale will be the TODOS strand speakers at the California Mathematics Council-North Conference, December 2nd-4th, in Pacific Grove.  The mini-conference begins the afternoon of December 2 with TODOS member, Harold Asturias presenting a session on equity. The TODOS strand speakers will present on Saturday, December 3rd. 

Supporting Mathematics Teachers and Teaching

The U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction and the University of Helsinki held a Workshop on Supporting Mathematics Teachers and Teaching in the United States and Finland August 1-2, 2016, in Finland. Videos of the workshop sessions, presentations, and background readings are available.

Sad News

It is with great sorrow and regret that we notify you of the passing of our friend, colleague, and beloved member of the TODOS family, Harriet Evelyn Haynes on July 16, 2016, in Brooklyn, New York.  Harriet was a vital part of the mathematics education community and was an awardee of the TODOS Iris Carl Leadership and Equity Award in 2012.
