September-October Reading

The Collective Call to Action September-October reading suggested by the Journal of Urban Mathematics Education (JUME) are the following three articles: Mathematics as Gatekeeper: Power and Privilege in the Production of Knowledge (Martin et al JUME 2010), “Both And”—Equity and Mathematics: A Response to Martin, Gholson, and Leonard (Confrey JUME 2010), and Engaging Students in Meaningful Mathematics Learning: Different Perspectives, Complementary Goals (Battista JUME 2010). Nominations for TODOS Board Members

Nominations for TODOS President-Elect and TODOS Directors (two) will open on October 1st. Nominate friends and colleagues who can contribute their passion for and commitment to equity and excellence in mathematics for all students as potential members of the TODOS Board. The President-Elect serves a four-year term—one year as President-Elect, two years as President, and one year as Immediate Past President—whereas the Directors will serve a three-year term. CMC-S Conference Featured Speakers

Diversity of the Featured Speakers for the upcoming CMC-South Annual Conference is sure to create many opportunities to hear different perspectives and engage in conversations around equity and excellence.  It is exciting to see so many TODOS members as featured speakers. Volunteer to Staff the TODOS Booth--Hartford/Kansas City

Are you attending the NCTM Regionals in either Harford, CT or Kansas City, MO? If so, consider volunteering to spend two hours at the TODOS booth to share why you joined TODOS and why attendees should join TODOS. Your efforts will make a difference when you encourage friends, colleagues, and other conference attendees to become members. Sign up for Hartford (October 4-6) and/or Kansas City (November 1-3).

This will be the second year in a row that TODOS will have an exhibit booth and will sponsor Student Awards at the Ohio Council Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) Conference to be held in Akron, OH, October 10-12, at the John S. Knight Center. All TODOS members attending the OCTM are asked to volunteer to staff the TODOS booth for two hours. Encourage your friends and colleagues to join by sharing why you joined TODOS. The CMC-South Conference in Palm Springs on November 1-2 will include many TODOS members attending and speaking. Support TODOS by volunteering to staff the TODOS Booth for two hours or more. Your efforts are critical to TODOS because of your authenticity with local attendees. You can communicate your passion and commitment to TODOS. TODOS Student Awards will also be presented. 

NCSM Elections: TODOS Members Are Candidates

Online voting for NCSM candidates is now open for all NCSM members for a Second Vice President and three Regional Directors. TODOS Members who are candidates include the following: Eric Milou and Shawn Towle, Second Vice President; and Cathy Boutin, Regional Director, Eastern 1. Online voting opened on September 15th and closes October 15th. Vote today!

NCTM Elections: TODOS Members Are Candidates

NCTM Members will be electing a President-Elect and four Directors. Elections open on Friday, September 28th. TODOS Members who are candidates include the following: John Carter and Trena Wilkerson, President-Elect; Jennifer Outzs, Director, Middle School Level; Susie Katt, Director, Elementary School Level; Carol Matsumoto, Canadian Region; and Beverly Ferrucci, Director At-Large.

TODOS Dues to Increase on January 1, 2019!

TODOS dues increase on January 1st to $35 for one year and $100 for three years. Renew your membership now and pay 2018 dues. Contact Member Services indicating a one-year ($25) or three-year ($70) renewal. You will be sent an invoice to be paid by December 31st to receive the 2018 membership rates. Contact Member Services if you have any questions or comments.

Bill Jasper Selected for Regents’ Teacher Award

Bill Jasper was recently selected as the 2018 Regents’ Teacher for the Texas State University System (TSUS). The Regents’ Teacher is selected based on outstanding performance as an educator, contributions to the development of courses, and use of innovative teaching methods, among other criteria. In addition to a framed resolution and commemorative medallion, he will receive a $3,000 cash award and will maintain the title of “Regents’ Teacher” for the duration of his service within TSUS.

Educational Songs in Stem

With features such as conversational vocabulary and direct sentence structure, lyrics are an ELL-friendly, culturally relevant, and memorable vehicle for learning STEM content. ELSF Launches Guidelines for Mathematics Materials

The English Learners Success Forum (ELSF), to transform the way instructional materials are developed for English Learners (ELs), launched the Guidelines for Mathematics Materials for ELs and Resources. TODOS Members Sylvia Celedón-Pattichis, Kathryn Chval, Jack Dieckmann, Mark Driscoll, Cathy Martin, Susie W. Håkansson, Judit Moschkovich, Craig Willey, and William Zahner contributed to the creation and refinement of the guidelines.

Profile in Education Equity: Daniel Zavala

Daniel Zavala, the director of policy and government relations at the League of Education Voters, serves the Latino community. “My motivation comes from the historic and systemic lack of service and access to opportunities that lead to generational cycles of missed potentiality,” he says. NAME Conference:

The National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) Conference will be held November 27-30, 2018, in Memphis, TN. The Conference Theme is “How Many More ‘Til We Rise Up? Multicultural Education, a Radical Response of Love, Life and Dr. King’s Dream.” Keynote speakers include Maureen Costello, Patrick Camangian, and Beverly Daniel Tatum. NAME focuses on advancing and advocating for social justice and equity. Register for the conference!
