TODOS Elections! Vote Today!

It's Election Season, and time to vote! Voting for our two new Directors for the TODOS Board is now open. Visit the elections page to find links to the four candidates' profiles and the ballot, where you will cast your vote for no more than TWO candidates. Deadline for voting is Monday, February 15th. Our four outstanding Director candidates include: Kyndall Brown, California; Sandra Crespo, Michigan; Tod Shockey, Ohio; and Alejandra Sorto, Texas. Contact the Chair for further information.

TODOS 2016 Program: Panel Presentation

Happy New Year! TODOS 2016 is five months away! On Friday, June 24th during lunch at the TODOS 2016 Conference, there will be a panel presentation titled Juan's Mathematical Journey of Overcoming Injustice: A Dialogue Examining Issues of Equity and Social Justice. Alejandra Sorto and Juan Valadez will present the story and Alfinio Flores will moderate. The panelists will be Julia Aguirre, Carlos LópezLeiva, and Eduardo Mosqueda. Honor a Mathematics Equity and Leadership Educator

Do you know individuals who have made a difference in your life or in the lives of others? Nominate them for the TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award that recognizes an educator committed to improving mathematics education for all students and has made, or is making unique contributions that have impacted equity and access for underserved students, particularly Latina/o students. Nominations will remain open until March 1, 2016. Contact the Co-Chairs for addition information.

TODOS Live! Thursday, February 25th

Join your TODOS Colleagues for the Feb 25th TODOS Live! at 4:30 p.m. PST. Steve Leinwand will present Our Questions and Their Discourse are the Keys to Their Engagement and Learning. Establish language rich classrooms where students are actively engaged in thinking, communicating, and problem solving by the questions asked that support discourse in the classroom. Help Spread the Word About TODOS 2016!

You are encouraged to send a TODOS 2016 Conference Flyer and information about the teacher stipend to attend the conference to your students, friends, or colleagues. Stipends are still available for classroom teachers, and they are provided on a first come-first served basis. In addition, you will find a slide for your use should you like to share this information at a presentation you are making. We want you to promote the TODOS 2016 Conference everywhere!

TODOS Members Attending ICME 13

Congratulations to TODOS members Kyndall Brown and Linda Fulmore who were awarded an NCTM Travel Grant to attend ICME 13 in Hamburg, Germany. Also attending will be Joanne Rossi Becker, co-chair of the Equity in Mathematics Education Topic Study Group, and Susie W. Hakansson. If you received an NCTM Travel Grant or are planning to attend ICME 13, send your name to the Enews Editor and it will be included in the next Enews. TODOS may have a strong contingent in Hamburg.

Journal of Urban Mathematics Education

The Journal of Urban Mathematics Education is a peer-reviewed, open-access, academic journal to foster a transformative global academic space in mathematics that embraces critical research, emancipatory pedagogy, and scholarship of engagement in urban communities. The view of the urban domain extends beyond the geographical context, into the lives of people within the multitude of cultural, social, and political spaces in which teaching and learning takes place. The current issue includes many TODOS members as authors.

NCTM Annual Meeting in San Francisco

NCTM News

The current NCTM News includes many interesting items that may be of interest to TODOS members. Short items include the following: Advocacy Toolkit (with NCTM Communications Guide), Principles to Actions translated into Spanish, Hunt Institute videos (to enhance understanding of the mathematics that students need to succeed in college, life, and careers), and NCTM Illuminations. In addition, nominations are sought for NCTM Director. NCTM News is sent to all NCTM Affiliates via the Affiliates NCTM Representative.

Jaime Escalante Honored in Postage Stamp

The late educator Jaime Escalante, whose work with inner-city students was the subject of a 1988 film, is being honored with a postage stamp this year. Roy Betts, a spokesman for United States Postal Service, said "The legendary educator is well-known for academic excellence and working with inner-city youth to help them master calculus."

Jo Boaler's New Book Includes Equitable Strategies

Jo Boaler's new book, Mathematical Mindsets: Unleashing Students' Potential Through Creative Math, Inspiring Messages, and Innovative Teaching, includes a chapter on equitable strategies. Boaler quotes: "It is imperative for our society that we move to a more equitable and informed view of mathematics learning in our conversations and work with students."
