Your TODOS To Do List

Check the TO DO list for this month. (1) Nominate a colleague for the 2018 Iris M. TODOS 2018 Ignite Session

Have you signed up to attend the TODOS 2018 Conference? The November 2017 Enews featured the Impact Sessions with the speakers, their topics, and descriptions. In future issues, other types of sessions will be featured. TODOS 2018 will also include an Ignite Session during lunch on Friday, June 22nd. The outstanding slate of speakers are the following: Cynthia Anhalt, Jennifer Bay-Williams, Sylvia Celedón-Pattichis, Carlos LópezLeiva, and Chadd McGlone. See you there!

A Collective Call to Action: January-February 2018

There is still time to complete the January/February 2018 reading titled: Excellence Through Equity: Five Principles of Courageous Leadership to Guide Achievement for Every Student. Courage is an essential human virtue, and the book discusses how courageous leadership is the “engine that drives the paradigm shift.” Is your leadership courageous? Participate in the Community Forum.

TODOS Live! 

Remember to sign up for the TODOS Live! session that will be held on Tuesday, January 23rd at 4:30 PM PST on Promoting Equity through Personal Stories using the work of Ana Bacera and Julian Weissglass. This is the first of a new series titled Equity: Brief Chats on Powerful Resources. If you missed previous TODO Live! many of them were recorded and can be viewed. If you are interesrted in presenting a TODOS Live! session, contact the chairs.

Vote for TODOS Board Members Now

The election for TODOS Board members is open. The candidate for TODOS Vice President is Rocío Benedicto, New Mexico State University. The two candidates for TODOS Director are Zandra de Araujo, University of Missouri, and Crystal Kalenic-Craig, University of Texas at San Antonio. Go to the elections page to view the candidates’ statements and to vote. Deadline to vote is Friday, February 16th.

Cathy Kinzer Award

Are you planning to attend the TODOS 2018 Conference that will be held June 21-23, 2018? You have the opportunity to apply for the 2018 Cathy Kinzer Memorial Professional Development Award that will be given to a TODOS member to attend the conference. The awardee will receive complimentary conference registration and two nights’ lodging. Deadline for submission is March 1st. Contact the Awards Chair for additional information.

Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award

Do you know a mathematics educator who has made unique contributions impacting equity and access for underserved students? Has that work influenced the school, community, leaders, and practitioners? If yes, then nominate that individual for the TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award! The nominee does not need to be a TODOS Member. The nominator must be a TODOS member, but the letters or support do not need to be members. Go to the 2018 Nominations Packet for information. Deadline for submission is March 1st.

TODOS Blog for January 2018

Go to the  January 2018 TODOS Blog  and read the entry on Mathematics and Diversity. Consider the question: Why think about diversity in the teaching and learning of mathematics?  Watch TODOS Live! presentation by  Marta Civil. Participate in this blog by responding to any of the questions: (1) What do you do when the teacher's and the students' backgrounds are different?, (2) What do you do when the diversity among students themselves is wide?, and (3) What do you do in the classroom when students’ experiences with mathematics are diverse? Related resources are also provided.

2018 NCTM Annual Meeting and Exposition

The NCTM Annual Meeting is coming soon. The preconference workshops include one led by TODOS members: Teaching Mathematics through Social Justice: Mathematics Ideas for the Classroom and Beyond. Register for the preconference too! Washington, D.C., is home to world-famous monuments, memorials, and museums that capture the imagination and tell a story. Making STEM Subjects Accessible

The article, Making STEM Subjects Accessible: Bilingual STEM Resources, explores the lack of bilingual STEM education materials available for English learners in U.S. Schools. Fortunately, educators and educational publishers are beginning to address this issue. Read the information on bilingual STEM resources.

NCTM Regional in Hartford Connecticut

The NCTM Regional in Hartford, CT, will be held October 4-6, 2018. Two of the six strands are the following: Increasing English Learners’ and Emerging Bilinguals’ Access to Mathematics and Reaching Each and Every Learner: Student Agency, Ownership, and Identity. Consider submitting a proposal to speak. Deadline is March 1st.
